September Marks a Season to Emerge

ree

Emerging from the summer always feels like a bit of a rebirth.

The crisp fresh air is a reminder that we are coming out of the heat (in many parts of the world), and the sight of school buses and children with backpacks signals the end of a less-prescribed season.

While, for me, this September marks the first in 21 years where one of my children is not starting school, it still feels like a beginning. In fact, as I dig up the earth to build a new studio on my property upstate, and clean out the apartment in Brooklyn where I raised my boys (trying to get them to claim, get rid of or store in my basement the flotsam and jetsam of their childhood), it feels like the preparation for a new stage of life.

My contractor showed up last week with something on the end of a stick. As he neared, I realized it was one of the Monarch caterpillar cocoons he had told me he and his son collect from the milkweed growing near their house in the Catskills.

"This is gonna hatch today," he said with assurance, having seen 24 of them do so this summer.

And so it did. I'd planned to sit and stare at it on my deck all day, but forgot, so just missed the actual emergence. But it was cool enough to see the brand new butterfly, wings still wet and attempting to open from where they'd been bound visibly within the clear artfully dotted cocoon.

Wow. Talk about metaphors. Nature has a way of sending us the messages we need, little reminders of the seasons, and the cycles, and how everything--including us--needs to morph and change. There is always beauty to be found in these processes, even within the more difficult of transitions, if we look, and listen carefully, if we commit to seeing and hearing it.

I have a variety of opportunities for you to listen mindfully to what changes you want and need this season as I support your process with a unique composition of my bells, bowls, drums and other percussion, including my voice.

In Brooklyn, I will be doing private events at Opportunity House temporary housing shelter, The Apsley by Sunrise Senior Center and at a global ad agency. Reach out if you want to book a private individual or group session for personal or professional events.
