October Brings the Dawn of a New Day

Writer's picture: Stephanie ThompsonStephanie Thompson

I drive to see the sunrise at the Catskill Mountain House overlook in Haines Falls, NY. I see a glimpse of it as I round North/South Lake, put pedal to the metal to make it, park and nearly run with my dog down the path carved through the woods.

And then I am there, at the large grassy area cleared of trees and brush, open. And the sun appears, bright, peaking through dotted cloud formations, lording over the valley well below, over the Hudson River and all the people.

Mostly it is silent at this early hour, except the occasional bird crying out its song. It is breathtaking.

It is the morning of the Libra eclipse and I am a Libra. It is also Rosh Hashanah, the New Year for the Jewish people, and I grew up celebrating, driving high above my basin town of Tucson, Arizona to the mountains to observe. My favorite part would be to walk off alone between services and sit under the tall pines, feeling the cool mountain air and the sound of the wind as it whipped through the branches.

I think of this now, having found my place on another mountaintop across the country, how nature has always been my spiritual savior. I walk to the lake and take off my socks and boots and immerse my feet into the bracing waters. The clouds surround me and it feels like I am somewhere else besides Earth.

It is a good week to blur things, to imagine a misty murky Somewhere Else, where hurricanes and wars do not exist, where there is only love and light and beauty.

There is no denying hardship and horrors, but there are ways to come into the beauty of the moment, to stay present and calm in the midst of situations one might very well not choose. Sound is one of them. One can tune in to a beautiful place in one's mind and body by tuning in to the vibration and frequency of a series of sounds, nature sounds, native sounds, vocals and various notes played out through chimes and bells that allow your nervous system to relax and reset. Let go of the tensions of the day, the month, the year, as you come fully into now.

Every day is a chance to start over. The sun dawns anew over the Earth, and we can bear witness to that same sort of rebirth in ourselves. The Fall season is a beautiful reset time, the trees letting go of their leaves, the ground soon to freeze and harden, lying dormant until it is time to loosen and let things grow once again. Good time to take stock, and begin the process of pondering what you might want to seed come Spring...
